College Dorm Essentials - For Real.
People tend to look up "college dorm essentials" or "college must-haves" before leaving or returning to campus. 90% of the results appear to be people advertising products or naming things no one needs that will only take up space.
- Shower shoes
- Surge protector
- Air freshener
- Mattress protector
- Small fan
- Trashcan
Forget anyone that says you need to buy some fancy "Adidas shower shoes" or something. No. I got mine at a Target for $6 but honestly if you have a pair of plastic, lightweight shoes that have space in the sole for water to drain, that works.
Choose one with as many plugs as you like, just make sure you get one because most dorms have maybe two plugs per side and half the time they're under the bed. Most college dorms do not allow extension cords (because they are a fire hazard), but surge protectors are allowed. Plus, they will keep anything you have plugged in safe during thunderstorms (especially if you are going to school somewhere with lots of storms, like, say, Florida).
Dorms WILL end up stinking or at least smelling stale, since often the windows don't open and if you prop any dorms open you run the chance of ruining the AC. Get one of those cheap air freshners that go off every 12 hours or so. I got mine at Walmart. There was a kid in my house who's dorm smelled so strongly of feet I smelled it from my room. PLEASE.
Whether or not you get a mattress topper is your prerogative, but for the love of god get a mattress protector. These are those plastic sheets. You don't know what the people before you did to that mattress and I promise you the university or college did NOT clean much before you got there.
Along with an air freshener, something to move around the air is useful. Small fans can be like 5 bucks if you go to the right place. Mine was !
Honestly, more people forget this than you'd expect but it's a Need. Imagine it's pouring outside. What are you going to do with your microwave packaging? You could keep it in your room but honestly, gross. This is more expensive especially if you look for those half-recycling-half-trash ones. You're better off buying two cheap ones and designating one for trash and one for recycling.
Those are the true must-haves. Do not waste money, you're already going to college. Good luck.
